Overview
A 9-day introduction to Japan split between the modern capital and the old one. Tokyo days cover Asakusa and Senso-ji, the Meiji Shrine, Shibuya, teamLab and a day trip to Hakone and Mount Fuji. A bullet-train ride then reaches Kyoto for Fushimi Inari, Kinkaku-ji, Arashiyama's bamboo grove and Gion, with a side trip to the deer park and Great Buddha of Nara. Includes 7 nights of hotels with breakfast, a 7-day Japan Rail Pass and reserved shinkansen seats.

Itinerary
Arrive at Haneda or Narita and transfer to your hotel by shared shuttle or rail. Rest of the day free to adjust; optional evening in Shinjuku for the Omoide Yokocho lanes.
Asakusa and the Senso-ji temple, a Sumida River cruise to Hamarikyu Garden, and the Imperial Palace East Gardens. Evening at the Tokyo Skytree or Shibuya Sky observation deck.
Meiji Shrine and Harajuku's Takeshita Street, Omotesando, the Shibuya scramble crossing, and a teamLab digital-art museum visit (ticket included).
A loop through Hakone using the mountain railway, ropeway and a Lake Ashi cruise, with Mount Fuji views on clear days and the Owakudani volcanic valley. Return to Tokyo by evening.
Check out and ride the Tokaido Shinkansen to Kyoto (about 2 hours 15 minutes). Afternoon at Fushimi Inari's thousands of vermilion torii gates. Check in for a three-night stay.
Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion), Ryoan-ji's rock garden and Nijo Castle in the morning; the Higashiyama lanes to Kiyomizu-dera in the afternoon, ending in Gion at dusk.
Morning in Arashiyama - the bamboo grove, Tenryu-ji and the Togetsukyo bridge - then a train to Nara for the deer park, Todai-ji's Great Buddha and Kasuga Taisha.
A free day for the Nishiki food market, a tea ceremony, the Philosopher's Path, or a day trip to Osaka or Himeji Castle by rail.
Transfer to Kansai International Airport (about 75 minutes by Haruka express) for your onward flight.
